Description
One hot July day I visited Smederevo, the old town in the heart of Serbia located on the banks of the Danube. One of the main sights of Smederevo is the old medieval fortress from the 15th century, Smederevo Fortress or Jerina's Town. The city was built by the Serbian Despot Djuradj Brankovic and his wife Jerina in just a few years which was very quickly for that time, so many builders died of exhaustion. People were looking for a culprit and the wife of Serbian Despot Djuradj Branković – Jerina (Irene Kantakouzene) was blamed for it. She was named “Damned Jerina” and that name remained until this day. It is the last great creation of the Serbian military construction and one of the largest fortifications in Southeast Europe. It was built at the place where the river Jezava flows into the Danube. Smederevo Fortress is preserved in its integral form, including the castle - Small Town, and the urban settlement enclosed with ramparts and towers.
It is certainly the main attraction in Smederevo and You must see it if you ever come to this city.
This is a view from a great park inside of the fortress. It was a very sunny day and I took this picture in the early afternoon so the lighting wasn't so good but I couldn't wait for the evening and better light condition because I had to go.
